West Suffolk College
West Suffolk College is a further education college in Bury St Edmunds, also serving our rural community through Local Learning Centres in Haverhill, Ipswich, Mildenhall, Stowmarket and Sudbury.
We’re a member of the University of Suffolk (UoS Bury St Edmunds) and provide full-time and part-time degree courses for around 800 students every year. Our annual graduation is held in St Edmundsbury Cathedral, and is a very important day for our students and the town.
If you don’t have the qualifications to get to university or left school early, our Access to Higher Education Diplomas will prepare you for degree-level courses so you can start your journey to a dream career.
How long will it take for me to complete a course?
You’ll be able to complete your Access to Higher Education Diploma in around 12 months and will have flexibility on when you study on a range of the courses.
How will I be assessed?
You’ll normally do a combination of coursework and exams and you’ll accumulate credit towards your Access to Higher Education Certificate as you progress through the course.
Is it right for me?
The subject you wish to study or the profession you wish to move into will normally determine your choice of course. If you’d like to study for a degree but don’t have the qualifications you need, then an Access to Higher Education course could be for you. The courses attract a diverse range of students, and there’s no upper-age limit.
Our Health and Social Care Access to HE courses are for those wishing to enter full time education and work in the health and care sector in occupations such as nursing, midwifery, radiography and occupational therapy. These classes contain a broad range of modules to prepare you for Higher Education or other further study.
Our Humanities and Social Sciences path gives you the opportunity to gain a broad basis in social sciences and gives you automatic progression onto the BA English and History degree at UCS Bury St Edmunds (taught at West Suffolk College). You could go on to careers in teaching, social work, civil service, human resources, management probation or retail.
We also run a number of bridging courses to higher education, return to study diplomas and other courses to encourage those who come to education later in life the best opportunities to achieve their goals.
